Popular Science Lecture Group

Dear Members, As suggested by the students who are regularly attending our meetings, the EC of the Popular Science Lecture Group decided to organize an event that will exclusively guide the students to choose to pick up the right branch of scienceas their career. Hence this PSL-27. This is going to be a panel discussion on four major branches of science, namely Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences. We know it is not going to provide the complete picture as it is not possible to have an in-depth discussion on the developments and opportunities in each of these four branches of science within a period of 90 minutes. This is going to be a preliminary discussion that will provide a bird’s eye view on each of the four branches we have taken up in this meeting. Depending on the success of the meeting and feedback we receive, we will continue our effort to travel in-depth in each branch of science in the future. We are bringing the following four experts to PSL .

1. Amber Habib

   He has studied at IIT Kanpur and the University of California, Berkeley, andheld post-doctoral positions at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute,Allahabad, and the Bangalore Centre of the Indian Statistical Institute. His research interests are in representation theory and mathematical finance. He has been Head of Department since 2013, and Dean Undergraduate Studiessince September 2015 in Shiv Nadar University.

2. Deepa Agashe

   Deepa has studied Microbiology at University ofPune and moved to University of Texas at Austin, the USA for research in Ecology,Evolution and Behavior (Advisor: Dr. Daniel Bolnick). She was Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dept of Organismic andEvolutionary Biology Harvard University, USA (Advisor: Dr Christopher Marx). Currently, she is an Assistant Professor, National Centre forBiological Sciences, Bangalore.

3. Harinath Chakrapani

   He completed his undergraduate and post-graduate studies in Chemistry from LoyolaCollege (1994-97) and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (1997-99),respectively. In the fall of 1999, he moved to Duke University, USA to pursuehis doctoral studies, which he completed under the supervision of Prof. Eric J.Toone in Dec. 2005. His post-doctoral research work was carried out at WakeForest University, where he worked with Prof. S. Bruce King and the NationalCancer Institute, under the mentorship of Dr. Larry K. Keefer. He joined IISERPune in July 2009 and is currently an Assistant Professor in IISER Pune https://selectbiosciences.com/conferences/biographies.aspx?speaker=813478&conf=DDD.

4. Sunil Kumar

   Prof Sunil Kumarcompleted his MSc in physics from Calicut University in 1987 and Ph.D. from RamanResearch Institute, Bangalore University in 1994. He was a Research Fellow atRaman Research Institute, Bangalore from 1988 to 1994. Post Doctoral Fellow of RamanResearch Institute from 1994 to 1995, Post Doctoral Fellow, The Institute ofMathematical Sciences, Chennai from 1995 to 1997, Post Doctoral Fellow MaxPlanck Institute for KG Golm, Germany from 1997 to 1999, Assistant Professor ofDepartment of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras from 1999 to2004, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Indian Institute ofTechnology, Madras from 2004 to 2006, Professor, Department of Physics from2006 till being appointed to IIT, Palakkad.

This is our 27th event of Popular Science Lecture since June 2018. The panelistsshall give a short introduction for about 20 minutes on the branch of sciencethey are in followed by a one-hour question-answer session. I request the participants to register withour website http://tnsfchennai.org on our website andcome prepared with your questions.

The webinar is going to take place on 8th August 2020at 11 AM I would request you share this information to the students knownto you. Once you did the registration, you will get a confirmation mailalong with the QR code to register your attendance for the event. Those whowant to get a certificate of attendance; you can simply download yourcertificate from our website. However you need to register for the event, andyour attendance should also be registered.
